Having stocked Niwaki in a previous work setting I knew their quality.
What is also well known is that they are cool.
We use the 'small' Golden Spade as a regular in our arsenal. Described by Niwaki as "incredibly strong, lethally sharp, surprisingly light - and golden."
Why do we use the small?
We plant a lot of plants. In my career I have dug in hundreds of plants in all sorts of soils and in all sorts of positions I can tell you. Border planting, tree planting, moving, dividing, cramped positions and many more.
During the build of The Löyly Garden, a sauna garden in Dorset, comprising of a sweeping border, feature multi-stems and some smaller fiddly details we used the golden spade. In my opinion it felt great. Well balanced, light, strong but crucially it filled a middle ground between the well worn trusty trench spade (very short, used for a perennial spade and for tight spaces) and a full length more traditional spade.
It's a proper mid border planting tool.
